Description

  • Build and maintain the central BigQuery warehouse and the ELT/ETL pipelines that keep it current, versioned, and reliable.
  • Design and own the version-controlled transformations and semantic layer that turn raw sources into analysis-ready models.
  • Maintain the master list of schools, including inclusion rules, record matching, and location mapping.
  • Coordinate with external and internal data providers to manage timelines, formats, and data handoffs.
  • Validate, clean, and quality-check incoming data, including automated staging-versus-production QC processes.
  • Handle state-specific rules, maintain correction layers, and resolve data anomalies with vendors.
  • Develop custom queries and datasets for internal learning, strategy, board, and funder needs.
  • Build and maintain analysis-ready tables and SQL models that power reporting and dashboards.
  • Test and validate school-quality metrics using analytical and statistical methods.
  • Document data structures, processes, and metric definitions, and manage annual metric lock/archive processes.
  • Serve as the point of contact for data access, troubleshooting, and ad hoc data requests.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in data systems management with demonstrated independent ownership of data systems.
  • Expert SQL skills and hands-on experience with a cloud data warehouse, preferably BigQuery.
  • Strong data modeling and query optimization experience on large, longitudinal datasets.
  • Experience building and maintaining ELT/ETL pipelines and a version-controlled transformation/semantic layer such as dbt or Dataform.
  • Demonstrated expertise in data validation, cleaning, and QA across complex, longitudinal datasets.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, or Stata for validation, automation, and analysis.
  • Comfort using AI tools to accelerate data work, such as drafting or debugging SQL and documentation.
  • Strong documentation and data governance practices, plus clear communication with vendors and non-technical users.
  • Proficiency with a BI/visualization tool such as Looker Studio or Tableau (preferred).
  • Experience in K-12 education or education philanthropy, including NCES or state DOE data sources and education metrics (preferred).
  • Comfort with geospatial data and geocoding tools such as BigQuery GIS, geopandas, Census geocoder, QGIS, or ArcGIS (preferred).
  • Experience reconciling data across multiple analytics providers or models (preferred).
