Description

  • Collaborate with Product, Compliance, and Operations teams to design and launch new products while translating legal and regulatory requirements into practical solutions.
  • Advise on securities, AML/ATF, payments, consumer protection, and other legal and regulatory matters affecting Shakepay's business.
  • Lead regulatory initiatives, including supporting examinations, audits, licensing work, policy development, and engagement with regulators.
  • Provide business-focused legal advice to company leaders and help teams navigate ambiguity and make informed decisions.
  • Identify opportunities to use AI, automation, and scalable processes to improve legal workflows and support business growth.
  • Support a range of additional legal matters as needed, including commercial agreements, corporate governance, employment, and strategic projects.

Requirements

  • Qualified lawyer in Canada with more than 5 years of in-house experience, ideally in fintech, payments, financial services, crypto, or a fast-growing technology company.
  • Able to work independently in a small team, make decisions with incomplete information, and move work forward without excessive supervision.
  • Strong business-oriented legal judgment, starting from the product or business outcome and recommending the best path forward based on risk and options.
  • Comfortable advising product and operations teams directly on ambiguous issues with no perfect answer.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal issues clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Experience in both a law firm and an in-house legal team is a plus.
  • Experience in a startup or growth environment where priorities change quickly is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Bitcoin, crypto, securities, payments, AML/ATF, or regulated financial products in Canada is a plus.
  • Experience using AI, automation, or lightweight tools to improve legal work and team efficiency is a plus.
  • English proficiency is required due to the proportion of English-speaking customers and the accessibility of the platform across Canada.

  • Base salary range of CAD 150,000 to CAD 220,000.
