Description

  • Define the long-term technical strategy and architecture for Homefeed, Search, and AI Assistant across retrieval, ranking, personalization, and generative experiences.
  • Drive a multi-year roadmap to unify signals, features, and models across discovery surfaces.
  • Lead the design and adoption of large-scale retrieval and ranking systems that improve relevance and monetization.
  • Architect how large language models and foundation models integrate into the core discovery stack, including query understanding, intent modeling, content understanding, orchestration, and safety guardrails.
  • Set the technical direction for experimentation, measurement, and evaluation frameworks, including offline metrics, online experiments, and causal inference.
  • Provide hands-on leadership on a small number of high-leverage projects through design reviews, prototypes, launch de-risking, and mentoring.
  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Research, and Design to translate product bets into technical plans and solve for long-term platform health.
  • Raise engineering standards for reliability, performance, security/privacy, cost efficiency, and operational health of large-scale ML systems.
  • Represent Pinterest externally through talks, publications, and partnerships, and help attract and grow top talent.
  • Work horizontally across Homefeed, Search, and AI Assistant teams while contributing to technical alignment and standards.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of industry experience in large-scale systems and/or machine learning, with impact in search, recommendations, feeds, or conversational AI.
  • Proven experience as a Distinguished Engineer, Architect, or equivalent senior technical leader driving cross-org strategy and execution.
  • Deep expertise in at least two areas such as large-scale retrieval and ranking, representation learning, search systems, or large language models and generative AI.
  • Experience with learning-to-rank, multi-task or multi-objective optimization, bandits, or RL for recommendations.
  • Experience with embeddings, multi-modal models, and dense and sparse retrieval.
  • Experience with indexing, query understanding, relevance tuning, and latency/throughput optimization.
  • Experience with prompting, fine-tuning, RAG, agents, safety/guardrails, and evaluation for LLM-based systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive multi-year architectural transformations at scale, such as re-architecting ranking stacks or unifying feature platforms.
  • Strong product intuition and experience partnering with PM, Design, and Data Science on ambiguous 0→1 and 1→N product bets.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Nice to have: prior experience in consumer discovery products at global scale or building/integrating AI assistants or agentic workflows.

Benefits

  • Base salary range of $280,148 to $576,774 USD for US-based applicants.
  • Position is eligible for equity.
  • Flexible working model through PinFlex, with some teams operating remotely and others requiring periodic in-office collaboration.
