Description

  • Build and operate data pipelines that ingest, process, store, and serve large-scale academic data reliably.
  • Optimize full-text search performance, including indexing, relevance tuning, and query optimization.
  • Handle PDF processing at scale, including extraction, transformation, storage, and delivery.
  • Design and maintain clean, reliable REST APIs for internal and external use.
  • Work with web scraping workflows and third-party data sources to gather heterogeneous data.
  • Improve data quality through careful attention to correctness, deduplication, and consistency.
  • Collaborate across backend systems that support a database of 250M+ academic papers and user data.
  • Support production services running on AWS.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering experience building and operating data-heavy systems in production.
  • Experience deploying and operating services on AWS.
  • Experience designing and maintaining data ingestion pipelines for messy, heterogeneous sources.
  • Comfort with web scraping and working with third-party data sources and APIs.
  • Familiarity with Node.js and TypeScript, or comfort working in that environment from another background such as Java or Python.
  • High standards for data quality, with careful attention to correctness, deduplication, and consistency.
  • Solid understanding of full-text search systems, including indexing strategy, relevance tuning, and query optimization.
  • Proficiency in building reliable REST APIs.
  • Familiarity with academic publishing formats and data sources such as PubMed, Crossref, and arXiv is preferred.
  • Experience with PDF processing pipelines at scale is preferred.
  • Experience with LLM-based document processing or ML pipelines for extracting structured data from unstructured text is preferred.
  • Experience with large-scale web crawling and scraping is preferred.
