Description

  • Lead the company’s patent strategy, including patent mining sessions, claim drafting, and coordination with outside counsel on filing and prosecution.
  • Manage the existing patent portfolio, including renewals, international filings, annuities, and potential patent sales.
  • Train product and engineering teams on patentability, IP best practices, and related topics.
  • Lead IP licensing and contracting discussions with National Laboratories, federal agencies, contractors, and commercial counterparties.
  • Support freedom-to-operate analyses, IP due diligence, and other IP matters across the business.
  • Help develop scalable IP processes and policies as the company grows.
  • Support IP-related negotiations involving technology development and ownership.
  • Assist with other legal needs across the company as they arise.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
  • U.S. Patent bar admission.
  • 5-7 years of intellectual property experience at a large law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Experience drafting patent claims and managing patent prosecution.
  • Experience negotiating IP licensing and technology transfer agreements.
  • Technical background in nuclear, electrical, or chemical engineering, through a degree or substantial relevant work experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple matters simultaneously.
  • Experience working in-house at a high-growth or startup company is preferred.
  • Experience managing IP or licensing discussions with the U.S. government, National Laboratories, or other federal research institutions is preferred.
  • Experience building or managing a patent portfolio at a comparable company is preferred.
  • Experience with joint ventures and/or project finance is preferred.
  • Interest in experimenting with AI and other tools to support a lean IP function is preferred.
  • Experience with nuclear or nuclear-adjacent technologies or renewables is preferred.
