Description

  • Design, build, and maintain data products that support R&D, analytics, lab, and scientific workflows from design through deployment and iteration.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines for large, complex datasets from raw inputs to derived, analysis-ready datasets.
  • Design data models, schemas, and abstractions that align with genetics, bioinformatics, and downstream research analysis needs.
  • Design and enforce de-identification and privacy-preserving architectures that satisfy HIPAA and related regulatory requirements.
  • Design scalable data models to support analytics, reporting, and downstream applications while ensuring data quality, accuracy, lineage, and observability.
  • Partner with R&D scientists, bioinformatics teams, software engineers, product managers, and domain experts to translate research needs into technical solutions.
  • Optimize storage, retrieval, and lifecycle management for large scientific files such as sequencing data and derived artifacts.
  • Drive rapid prototyping for exploratory and proof-of-concept initiatives and guide solutions toward production-grade systems.
  • Establish golden paths, templates, examples, documentation, and shared data product patterns for other engineers.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to mid-level engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or bioinformatics; healthcare or biotech data domain experience preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, including designing and maintaining data pipelines and cloud data architectures such as Snowflake and AWS.
  • Strong background in bioinformatics, genomics, or computational biology is required.
  • Understanding of genomics and bioinformatics data formats such as BAM, VCF, and FASTQ, including related compression, storage, delivery, and management needs.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting scientific R&D, lab workflows, and research teams with production-grade data systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and distributed processing frameworks such as Spark or equivalent.
  • Experience with modern orchestration tools such as Airflow, dbt, or Dagster.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools such as LLM copilots to accelerate solution development.
  • Strong data modeling expertise, including dimensional, normalized, and healthcare-specific schemas.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD for data pipelines and infrastructure as code using Terraform or CloudFormation, plus knowledge of data observability, testing, and data quality frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ownership of production-grade data systems and the full end-to-end pipeline lifecycle.
  • Ability to evaluate emerging data and AI technologies and recommend scalable solutions.
  • Exposure to vector databases, embeddings, semantic search, or RAG-based architectures is a plus.
  • Proven ability to work in fast-paced environments while balancing speed, rigor, and compliance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, analytics, and business stakeholders.
  • Experience working with healthcare, life sciences, or other highly regulated data, including hands-on HIPAA compliance.
