Description

  • Manage, coach and develop a team of Machine Learning specialists through regular 1:1s, feedback and development plans.
  • Help the Fraud group prioritise ML work on the highest-impact problems, balancing customer protection, regulatory expectations, operational impact and delivery speed.
  • Partner with Product, Risk, Engineering, Data and senior ML/Data colleagues to shape roadmaps and unblock delivery.
  • Oversee reliable ML delivery across the full model lifecycle, including development, deployment, monitoring, governance, documentation and ownership.
  • Maintain high standards for model performance, explainability, reproducibility, observability and safe production operation.
  • Ensure ML products are continuously owned, maintained and improved rather than treated as one-off projects.
  • Build a strong, inclusive team culture that supports feedback, learning and effective cross-functional collaboration.
  • Contribute to Monzo’s broader Machine Learning and Data discipline through hiring, improving ways of working and sharing reusable patterns.

Requirements

  • Experience managing Machine Learning specialists and delivering work through others.
  • Strong ML judgement across the full model lifecycle, from problem framing and feature/model development through deployment, monitoring, governance and iteration.
  • Comfort working in ambiguous, high-impact problem spaces where there may not be a single right answer.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with Product, Risk, Engineering, Data and senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to focus on outcomes over process and help teams prioritise work that protects customers and supports business goals.
  • Knowledge of what good production ML systems look like, with the ability to coach teams on standards and pragmatic decision-making.
  • Clear communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences, especially when discussing trade-offs, risks and recommendations.
  • Commitment to building inclusive teams where people at different experience levels can grow and work sustainably.
  • Experience in fraud, financial crime, risk, regulated environments or customer protection is a bonus, but not required.
