Description

  • Provide strategic legal advice and commercial solutions on employment, incentives, and pensions matters across Monzo Group entities in the UK and EU.
  • Act as a trusted adviser to the Group Chief People Officer, executive leadership, and People team on policies, procedures, guidance, and templates.
  • Partner with the VP of Reward, Reward team, and Chair of the Remuneration Committee on compensation arrangements and remuneration policies.
  • Manage and mentor a team of two senior employment lawyers and support other lawyers across the wider legal team.
  • Provide legal support across the full employee lifecycle, including hiring, executive service contracts, people processes, departures, and contentious matters.
  • Support international employment, incentives, and pensions projects in the EU and other jurisdictions, coordinating with in-country General Counsels and their teams.
  • Work collaboratively with Legal, People, Reward, Tax, Risk & Compliance, and Finance teams to align on cross-functional matters.
  • Develop and implement internal frameworks, processes, and procedures to improve the efficiency and scalability of EIP legal advice.
  • Deliver training and forward-looking guidance on legal and regulatory developments, risks, and opportunities.
  • Manage external legal counsel relationships and help optimize legal spend on EIP matters.

Requirements

  • Significant post-qualification experience in employment law, with incentives and defined contribution pensions experience preferred.
  • Approximately 15+ years PQE as a guide, though this is not a strict prerequisite.
  • Strong technical knowledge of employment law and preferably incentives and pensions matters.
  • Experience in private practice and ideally in-house, with financial services or a bank/fintech background preferred.
  • Ability to operate within banking regulatory compensation frameworks, including CRD V and SMCR.
  • Solid understanding of incentive structures, including share options.
  • Strategic thinker with strong communication skills and the ability to assess risk and recommend balanced solutions.
  • Comfort operating at all levels up to Executive and Remuneration Committee level while also being hands-on.
  • Ability to handle a wide range of legal issues and know when to engage external counsel cost-effectively.
  • In-house experience in financial services is preferred but not essential.
