Description

  • Design computational material science problems that challenge frontier AI models.
  • Create problems with answers that can be verified by code.
  • Use specialized tools such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, GeoPandas, or similar packages.
  • Write Python reference solutions for each task.
  • Provide input files and model or domain definitions as needed.
  • Set numerical answers and domain-appropriate tolerances for grading.
  • Test tasks in batches of parallel attempts and tune difficulty to target a 10–30% pass rate.
  • Revise scenarios, inversion parameters, and solver tolerances based on agent behavior.
  • Submit calibrated tasks for senior review in the relevant subfield.
  • Collaborate within a project-based workflow from application through qualification and task completion.

Requirements

  • Degree in Material Science or a related field.
  • 2+ years of research, applied, or teaching experience.
  • Python proficiency for writing reference solutions.
  • Fluency with, or strong willingness to independently learn, at least one scriptable package such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, xmitgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, or GeoPandas.
  • Ability to design problems that genuinely require a specialized solver.
  • Strong written English at C1+ level.
  • Availability for part-time, non-permanent project work.
  • Willingness to learn independently and ramp up quickly if unfamiliar with the listed tools.
