Description

  • Design computational material science problems that challenge frontier AI models.
  • Create problems with answers that can be verified by code inside a sealed Linux container.
  • Use specialized tools such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, or similar packages when building tasks.
  • Write Python reference solutions and provide any required input files, model definitions, or domain definitions.
  • Determine the correct numerical answer and define an appropriate domain-specific tolerance for grading.
  • Test and tune tasks in parallel batches to achieve a target pass rate of 10–30%.
  • Refine waveform scenarios, inversion parameters, and solver tolerances based on model performance.
  • Submit calibrated tasks for senior review and incorporate feedback to improve quality.
  • Work on project-based AI opportunities rather than permanent employment.

Requirements

  • Degree in Material Science or a related field.
  • 2+ years of research, applied, or teaching experience.
  • Python proficiency for writing reference solutions.
  • Strong familiarity with, or willingness to independently learn, at least one scriptable package such as ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, xmitgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, or GeoPandas.
  • Ability to design problems that genuinely require a specialized solver.
  • Strong written English at C1 level or higher.
  • Open to part-time, non-permanent project work.
  • Ability to learn independently and get up to speed quickly.
  • Experience with the listed tools is not required, but candidates must be ready to learn them on their own.
