Description

  • Own the lakehouse and streaming ingestion platform, including the infrastructure that supports data and ML workloads.
  • Design and ship new abstractions, tooling, and golden paths that other teams can use to land data and build pipelines.
  • Modernize the data platform by building the patterns Marqeta will run on for years.
  • Evolve and harden live production infrastructure without disrupting dependent teams.
  • Improve reliability, performance, and developer experience across the platform.
  • Lead design reviews and set the engineering bar through hands-on technical work.
  • Write production code for the platform’s hardest problems and prototype solutions when needed.
  • Partner with security, compliance, and consumer teams on platform architecture and delivery.
  • Contribute to platform transitions, including migration design, risk management, and execution.
  • Participate in rotational on-call pager duty and support blameless postmortems.

Requirements

  • Around 10 years of experience building software or data platforms, with emphasis on demonstrated work over years on paper.
  • Deep experience building data platforms rather than only pipelines.
  • Production experience with modern lakehouse technologies such as Iceberg or Delta.
  • Strong familiarity with AWS data services such as S3, Glue, and EMR, plus Spark, Airflow, Kafka, and IAM boundaries for multi-tenant data access.
  • Mastery of Python in a production data-platform context.
  • Credible depth in Go or Java.
  • Experience improving reliability, performance, and developer experience on live infrastructure.
  • Experience leading at least one major platform transition end-to-end, including build-vs-buy decisions, migration design, risk management, and delivery.
  • Ability to influence across platform, security, and consumer teams through design docs and RFCs.
  • Experience mentoring and growing other engineers, including peers at your level.
  • Helpful but not required: payments or fintech experience, including PCI-DSS, SOX, or SOC 2.
  • Helpful but not required: CDC tooling experience such as Debezium or Kafka Connect.
  • Helpful but not required: data governance tooling experience such as DataHub, Amundsen, or Collibra.
  • Helpful but not required: public technical writing or open-source contributions to data infrastructure.
