Description

  • Provide practical, commercially focused legal advice to business stakeholders and clients on operational and strategic matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal documents, including commercial agreements, NDAs, service agreements, leases, and vendor or customer contracts.
  • Support work across corporate/commercial, employment, regulatory, disputes, compliance, privacy, procurement, governance, or real estate matters as aligned to experience.
  • Manage outside counsel and service providers, including budgets, timelines, and matter strategy.
  • Assess legal risk and recommend pragmatic mitigations that align with business objectives.
  • Support dispute management, including early case assessment, document preparation, settlement discussions, and litigation oversight where applicable.
  • Contribute to compliance programs, internal controls, and policy development, including monitoring regulatory changes and advising on implementation.
  • Maintain accurate legal records, contract repositories, and matter documentation while ensuring confidentiality and proper information handling.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams such as HR, Finance, Procurement, Sales, and Operations to improve legal processes and decision-making.
  • Support governance processes, including board and committee documentation, and mentor junior colleagues where relevant.

Requirements

  • LLB/JD or equivalent is typically required for lawyer roles.
  • Membership in good standing with a provincial or territorial law society is required for counsel or lawyer positions.
  • For legal operations, contracts, compliance, or specialist roles, a relevant degree or qualification with strong legal experience may be considered.
  • Typically 5–12+ years of progressive legal experience in-house and/or in private practice.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: commercial contracts, corporate governance, employment, regulatory, disputes, compliance, privacy, or legal operations.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, stakeholder management, and risk-based judgment skills.
  • Familiarity with document management, contract lifecycle management (CLM), matter management, e-billing, and Microsoft 365 where applicable.
  • Professional fluency in English is required.
  • French is an asset for certain roles, particularly in Québec or national organizations.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines, work independently, and maintain discretion with sensitive information.
