Description

  • Design, build, and test core platform services across communications, reporting, dashboards, access, workflows, risk, payments, and compliance.
  • Shape architecture early in the design process for foundational systems.
  • Build self-service internal features and APIs for product teams.
  • Own platform performance, reliability, and long-term operation after launch.
  • Mentor other engineers on complex technical problems in large-scale domains.
  • Collaborate with Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design to define solutions and iterate quickly.
  • Prototype, iterate, and launch platform capabilities daily.
  • Build platforms that other engineering teams rely on to ship products customers trust and love.
  • Lead work on large-scale refactors and improvements across platform areas.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new platform capabilities.
  • Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, with an ability to apply and share best practices for safe scaling.
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and create measurable user impact at scale.
  • Experience with large-scale refactors, performance issues, reliability issues, and end-to-end ownership of a platform area.
  • Ability to mentor engineers and help maximize their performance and impact.
  • Experience in, or interest in working with, Ruby on Rails.
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.
  • Two-day travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is required.
  • A secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required for approved remote work and non-office days.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay with stock equity (RSUs) for full-time employees.
  • Cash compensation targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver and most remote locations.
  • Cash compensation targeted at $197,000–$247,000 in San Francisco and New York.
  • Benefits included for full-time employees.
  • Hybrid office expectations of approximately 2–3 days per week for employees based in office locations.
  • Remote work is available when approved, with a secure internet connection required.
