Description

  • Create and lead research agendas for GiveWell’s nutrition portfolios, focusing on the questions most likely to affect grantmaking decisions.
  • Conduct evidence reviews, synthesize research, and apply cost-effectiveness modeling to complex nutrition questions.
  • Tackle thorny research questions in existing portfolios, including program coverage, quality, and real-world performance.
  • Design and oversee learning grants and impact evaluations for new and existing programs.
  • Supervise researchers executing learning-grant work from scoping through interpreting results and integrating findings into models.
  • Build the evidence base for new programmatic areas through research synthesis, commissioning studies, and occasional primary data collection.
  • Provide research support to grantmakers by stress-testing assumptions, incorporating new data, and flagging high-uncertainty areas.
  • Own grant investigations end-to-end, from initial research question through grant recommendation.
  • Communicate externally about research findings and represent GiveWell to external counterparts.
  • Mentor and advise other researchers on the team.

Requirements

  • A quantitatively oriented advanced degree, such as in epidemiology, statistics, economics, public health, nutrition, or a related field.
  • Substantial professional experience relevant to nutrition.
  • Relevant experience in research roles, such as clinical nutrition research or epidemiological/health economics modeling.
  • Relevant experience in program roles, such as design and implementation or monitoring and evaluation.
  • Relevant experience in funding roles, such as grantmaking or impact investing.
  • Experience in public sector, private sector, or nonprofit roles that address malnutrition and improve lives.
  • Strong curiosity and comfort questioning others’ work and your own.
  • Ability to communicate confidence levels clearly and legibly.
  • Ability to maintain strong external relationships and moderate directness when needed.
  • Interest in working on a highly mission-driven research team and willingness to focus on the highest-priority questions.

Benefits

  • Salary of $308,000 for NYC or the San Francisco Bay Area roles.
  • Salary of $280,000 for all other U.S. locations, with a similar salary for international hires paid in local currency.
