Description

  • Improve the cause prioritization process to identify promising emerging areas for grantmaking.
  • Oversee a portfolio of grant investigations and grant management across the highest-priority emerging cause areas.
  • Build a research agenda that uses early grants to surface key uncertainties and inform future decisions.
  • Communicate externally and build a network of implementers, funders, and academics to source new ideas.
  • Manage a team, support teammates’ professional development, and create an agile, responsive team culture.
  • Directly investigate more complex and unusual grantmaking opportunities.
  • Lead research agendas that combine evidence review, cost-effectiveness modeling, and judgment to inform grantmaking.
  • Help identify and respond to new funding opportunities and gaps as donor priorities change.

Requirements

  • Quantitatively oriented advanced degree, or a commensurate amount of relevant experience if you do not hold one.
  • Substantial relevant experience using empirical tools to make rigorous, evidence-based decisions in the real world.
  • Typically 5-10 years of post-graduate work experience before joining GiveWell.
  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to structure broad, ambiguous problems.
  • Experience managing people and supporting professional development.
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on new topics and pivot as priorities change.
  • Comfort making decisions under uncertainty and communicating confidence levels clearly.
  • Ability to build and maintain external relationships with implementers, funders, and academics.
  • Interest in GiveWell’s mission, truth-seeking culture, and cost-effectiveness-focused approach.

  • Location-based salary of $308,000 in NYC or the San Francisco Bay Area, $280,000 in other U.S. locations, and a similar locally denominated salary internationally.
