Description

  • Manage and grow a team of 5–7 senior engineers through hiring, onboarding, 1:1s, goal setting, feedback, career development, and performance management.
  • Own the technical outcomes, delivery, reliability, and major technical decisions for a payments, core platform, or data collection domain.
  • Partner with product leaders to balance feature delivery, technical debt, infrastructure investment, and engineering velocity.
  • Drive operational excellence across on-call, incident response, code quality, testing, AI, and deployment practices.
  • Set technical quality standards by reviewing architecture and designs, pressure-testing tradeoffs, and maintaining proximity to implementation without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Build and sustain an inclusive engineering culture centered on candid debate, product ownership, continuous improvement, and strong technical foundations.
  • Represent engineering with organizational stakeholders, translating technical considerations into business decisions and vice versa.
  • Partner with non-technical teams to develop effective product-development practices and understand field-program requirements.
  • Scale systems that support mobile money and banking integrations, recipient and program data, web applications, or offline-first enrollment and survey tooling.

Requirements

  • 3+ years managing software engineers through full delivery cycles.
  • 8+ years of industry experience building production software, with strong backend experience in databases, cloud services, and APIs.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, coach, develop, and retain inclusive, high-performing engineering teams during rapid growth.
  • Track record of building candid, ego-free engineering cultures with strong product ownership and continuous improvement in craft and tooling, including agentic engineering.
  • Strong technical judgment and experience making consequential architecture and product tradeoffs based on recipient impact.
  • Ability to create clarity in ambiguity, maintain focus, and enable senior teams to work quickly and autonomously.
  • Experience partnering effectively with non-technical stakeholders and building product-development fluency in organizations developing these practices.
  • Alignment with GiveDirectly’s values and demonstrated emotional intelligence, problem solving, project management, follow-through, and inclusivity.
  • English language proficiency.
  • Ability to travel approximately 3–4 times per year to countries of operation.
  • Must be based in an approved country and overlap with East Africa and US Eastern Time by at least three hours; U.S. and U.K. visa sponsorship is unavailable.

Benefits

  • Fully remote work with schedule flexibility, subject to required team-time overlap.
  • Competitive location-based salary, 15% target bonus with potential upside, and annual benefits stipend.
  • U.S. compensation: $181,130 base, estimated $208,300+ target total compensation, and $21,393 benefits stipend.
  • U.K. compensation: £124,370 base, estimated £143,026+ target total compensation, and £2,760 benefits stipend.
  • Kenya compensation: $112,350 base, estimated $129,203+ target total compensation, and $8,453 benefits stipend.
  • Benefits stipend may be used for benefits or taken as additional taxable income.
  • Professional growth in a candid, analytical, non-hierarchical culture with high ownership.
