Description

  • Build and maintain fundraising and donation workflows, including website functionality and backend plumbing.
  • Ensure donations are recorded accurately and safely initiated for delivery to recipients.
  • Develop tools and integrations that support fundraisers and improve donor communications.
  • Work directly with fundraising and other non-engineering teams on loosely defined, changing tasks.
  • Independently define, implement, test, launch, and maintain solutions.
  • Debug legacy code and resolve incidents, including during peak donation periods.
  • Participate in on-call coverage for Giving Tuesday and the final weeks of the year.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the US, Europe, and Africa, including periodic travel.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of engineering experience.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Experience or willingness to work with Laravel, PHP, plain JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Salesforce, WordPress, SQL, and CSV-based workflows; expertise in every technology is not required.
  • Ability to work autonomously across development, testing, deployment, bug fixing, and prioritization.
  • Comfort working directly with non-engineers on messy, poorly defined, rapidly changing work.
  • Willingness to own incidents and debug legacy or unfamiliar code when other engineers may be unavailable.
  • Availability for at least 3 hours of overlap between East Africa Time and US Eastern Time during the 8 a.m.–6 p.m. window.
  • Legal authorization to work in an eligible hiring country; GiveDirectly cannot sponsor US or UK employment visas.
  • Willingness to travel a few weeks per year to meet colleagues.
