Description

  • Manage and grow a team of 5–7 senior engineers through hiring, onboarding, 1:1s, goal setting, feedback, career development, and performance management.
  • Own technical outcomes for a platform domain, including delivery, reliability, architecture, and major technical decisions.
  • Partner with product leadership to balance feature delivery, technical debt, infrastructure investments, and velocity improvements.
  • Drive operational excellence across on-call, incident response, code quality, testing, AI, and deployment practices.
  • Build and maintain an inclusive engineering culture centered on candid debate, product ownership, continuous improvement, and high technical standards.
  • Represent engineering with stakeholders and leadership by translating technical realities into business decisions.
  • Review architectures and designs, pressure-test tradeoffs, and guide senior engineers without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Develop product-development practices with non-technical teams and help them adopt iterative delivery, demos, and feedback.
  • Own one platform domain: payments, core platform, or data collection.

Requirements

  • 3+ years managing software engineers through full delivery cycles.
  • 8+ years of experience building production software, with strong backend experience in databases, cloud services, and APIs.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, coach, develop, and retain high-performing, inclusive engineering teams during rapid growth.
  • Experience building engineering cultures based on candid debate, product ownership, continuous improvement, and modern tooling, including agentic engineering.
  • Strong technical judgment and experience making consequential architecture and product tradeoffs based on recipient impact.
  • Ability to create clarity in ambiguity, maintain focus, and enable senior teams to work autonomously.
  • Experience partnering effectively with non-technical stakeholders and building product-development fluency in developing organizations.
  • Alignment with GiveDirectly’s values, including emotional intelligence, problem solving, project management, follow-through, and inclusivity.
  • English language proficiency.
  • Must be based in an eligible country, overlap with East Africa and US Eastern Time by at least three hours, and travel approximately 3–4 times annually; U.S. and U.K. visa sponsorship is unavailable.

Benefits

  • Fully remote work with flexible scheduling, subject to required team-time overlap.
  • Performance bonus targeted at 15%, with potential upside.
  • Annual benefits stipend; amounts vary by location.
  • U.S. compensation: $181,130 base salary, $208,300+ estimated target total compensation, and $21,393 benefits stipend.
  • U.K. compensation: £124,370 base salary, £143,026+ estimated target total compensation, and £2,760 benefits stipend.
  • Kenya compensation: $112,350 base salary, $129,203+ estimated target total compensation, and $8,453 benefits stipend.
  • $3,000 employee referral reward for Senior Manager or above hires.
