Description

  • Serve as primary legal partner for Emergency Cash strategy, design, launch, and delivery.
  • Build repeatable legal frameworks covering country entry, regulatory review, government engagement, contracting, data use, and local counsel.
  • Develop response-readiness tools, templates, and decision frameworks.
  • Lead legal work during active emergencies and provide practical recommendations under time and information constraints.
  • Draft and negotiate partnership, technology, vendor, data-sharing, and other program agreements.
  • Advise U.S. programs on recipient eligibility, public benefits, tax, payments, family law, privacy, data use, and state requirements.
  • Structure and negotiate agreements with governments, researchers, community organizations, payment providers, and other partners.
  • Coordinate country teams, internal counsel, external advisors, and Legal Operations support.
  • Capture lessons from emergency responses and improve the legal model over time.
  • Support organization-wide legal standards and other priority matters across the global Legal team.

Requirements

  • Admission as an attorney in at least one jurisdiction with relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Experience advising on complex program, commercial, or regulatory matters in fast-moving or high-pressure environments.
  • Strong commercial contracting experience, including partnership, technology, vendor, and data-related agreements.
  • Ability to interpret unfamiliar legal and regulatory frameworks with limited precedent, time, or information.
  • Strong legal and business judgment, risk assessment, and practical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to translate complex legal requirements into clear guidance for non-lawyers.
  • Experience coordinating external counsel, consultants, or specialist advisors.
  • Working knowledge of data privacy and protection law.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and reprioritize during emergencies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with English fluency.
  • Preferred: experience in emergency response, humanitarian operations, new-country launches, U.S. public-benefits or government programs, multi-jurisdictional work, vulnerable populations, or mission-driven organizations.
  • Alignment with GiveDirectly’s values and competencies, including emotional intelligence, project management, follow-through, inclusivity, and problem solving.

  • Annual benefits stipend; U.S. stipend is $21,393, U.K. stipend is £2,760, and Kenya stipend is $8,454.
  • Compensation varies by location; listed U.S. base salary is $134,400, U.K. base salary is £91,900, and Kenya base salary is $106,280.
  • Approximately 3–4 work trips per year, with additional travel during active emergency responses.
