Description

Define the company’s technology vision, architecture, target stack, and build-vs-buy strategy.
Turn program and product strategy into a sequenced portfolio of technical investments.
Lead and balance six workstreams, including new cash delivery systems, legacy platform stabilization and migration, donor-facing products, emergency cash systems, enterprise technology, and internal tooling/cybersecurity.
Build and grow the technology organization, including engineering, product, data, security, infrastructure, and enterprise systems.
Recruit, develop, and retain technical talent and engineering leaders.
Set accountability, decision rights, and career paths for a high-performing team.
Own technical direction and quality standards for integrations, data, security, reliability, and technical debt.
Serve as an executive team member and partner with the CEO, VP Product, finance, risk, data, and country leaders.
Help non-technical stakeholders understand technical constraints, costs, priorities, and tradeoffs.
Travel approximately 4–6 times per year, including to GiveDirectly countries of operation.

Requirements

Senior leadership experience hiring, managing, developing, and retaining engineers and engineering leaders.
Proven ability to design team processes that deliver software with quality and speed.
Strong technical judgment on architecture, build-vs-buy decisions, and technical direction.
Ability to investigate problems directly when needed, without needing to be the primary implementer.
Strong business judgment and decisiveness under ambiguity.
Experience navigating tradeoffs across speed, reliability, security, flexibility, cost, technical quality, and user impact.
A clear point of view on how AI changes engineering productivity and organizational capability.
Experience moving a team from AI experimentation to measured real-world use.
Ability to set tools, culture, goals, and guardrails for an AI-first engineering environment.
Alignment with GiveDirectly’s values and leadership expectations.
Experience in operationally complex or regulated domains such as fintech, payments, humanitarian response, or global development (preferred).
Experience with financial controls, fraud risk, identity, or sensitive recipient data (preferred).
Experience operating across multiple countries, especially lower-income or infrastructure-constrained contexts (preferred).
Experience leading both product engineering and enterprise technology (preferred).
Ability to work remotely across US Eastern Time and East African Time.
Preference for candidates based in New York, London, or Nairobi.

Benefits

Total compensation of $366,000–$518,000 in the US, £225,000–£317,000 in the UK, or $333,000–$467,000 in Kenya.
Base salary plus performance-based bonus.
Annual benefits stipend.
Remote work arrangement.
No-negotiation pay policy for comparable roles.
Reasonable accommodations during the application and interview process.
Referral bonus of $3,000 for Senior Manager+ referrals and $500 for Manager referrals.
