Description

  • Contribute to large projects that evolve the core infrastructure behind Elasticsearch.
  • Design and implement horizontally scalable features and APIs.
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve performance and concurrency issues.
  • Improve the operation and observability of Elasticsearch cloud systems.
  • Develop automation and integrate agentic apps into developer workflows to improve productivity.
  • Collaborate with the Elasticsearch team, Elastic users, and open source projects.
  • Support support engineers with complex technical problems.
  • Own operational investigations end to end until stability or performance issues are resolved.
  • Lead and contribute to cross-team projects and technical design efforts.

Requirements

  • Experience crafting APIs and reasoning through technical tradeoffs.
  • Strong proficiency in core Java, including the standard library, concurrency constructs, and newer language features.
  • Experience with low-level Java topics such as concurrency, parallelism, and classloaders.
  • Proficiency in algorithms and data structures.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems and practices such as Buildkite, Argo CD, and GitOps.
  • Experience leading large-scale projects across engineering teams.
  • Ability to own projects from design through delivery.
  • Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code.
  • Ability to collaborate across functions and teams and move between projects or codebases as business priorities change.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a distributed team with asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.
  • Bonus: knowledge of JDK internals, including modules, the Java memory model, garbage collection, database load, and caching techniques.
  • Bonus: experience with observability and telemetry solutions, especially OpenTelemetry.
  • Bonus: knowledge of Go.
  • Bonus: knowledge of containers and Kubernetes.
  • Bonus: experience with Java build tools such as Gradle or Maven, with a strong preference for Gradle.
  • Bonus: experience working on a platform team or developer productivity team.

  • Base salary with no variable compensation component.
  • Typical starting salary range of $133,100–$210,600 USD, or $159,900–$252,900 USD in select locations.
  • Eligibility to participate in Elastic's stock program.
