Description

  • Translate the organization's strategic vision into clear priorities, outcomes, ownership, timelines, and coordinated execution plans.
  • Align work across teams, manage dependencies, and identify execution risks, capacity constraints, and duplication before they affect progress.
  • Lead and continuously improve core planning and management processes, including retreats, quarterly planning, leadership meetings, and progress reviews.
  • Develop practical operating systems, planning tools, dashboards, agendas, decision logs, and follow-up practices that improve transparency and execution.
  • Facilitate cross-functional planning, prioritization, and difficult tradeoff conversations among senior leaders.
  • Strengthen organizational communication by documenting decisions, clarifying next steps, and ensuring shared visibility into priorities and progress.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director by framing tradeoffs, reducing operational burden, and providing candid counsel.
  • Drive accountability across teams by surfacing and resolving issues related to timing, scope, sequencing, ownership, and coordination.
  • Lead organizational learning and continuous improvement through structured debriefs and the codification of lessons learned.
  • Oversee the integration, evaluation, and continuous improvement of SHC’s two-year state-based pilot and broader growth model.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience in senior operations, strategy, chief of staff, or organizational leadership roles, preferably in complex, national education nonprofits.
  • Demonstrated success translating strategy into execution across multiple teams or functions.
  • Experience designing and leading planning processes, operating rhythms, and progress-monitoring systems.
  • Experience leading teams through growth, change, or increased complexity.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit operating models, capacity constraints, and cross-functional coordination.
  • Experience serving as a strategic partner to an Executive Director, CEO, Chief Operating Officer, or equivalent executive leader.
  • Experience building organizational operating systems and management infrastructure in growing organizations.
  • Demonstrated success facilitating cross-functional decision-making among senior leaders.
  • Experience balancing organizational agility with disciplined execution.
  • Mission-over-ego mindset that prioritizes organizational impact and collective success over personal recognition.
  • Impact-over-process mindset with strong judgment about when structure is needed and when flexibility is better.
  • Relationship-centered leadership grounded in humility, respect, discretion, transparency, and organizational values.
  • Composed under pressure with the ability to make clear decisions in fast-moving, high-stakes situations.
  • Exceptional systems thinking and pattern recognition.
  • Strong project and portfolio management skills.
  • Clear, concise writing and communication skills.
  • High emotional intelligence and the ability to build trust and navigate ambiguity across diverse teams.
  • Ability to influence without supervisory authority and build practical systems people actually use.
  • Executive presence characterized by humility, discretion, composure, sound judgment, and commitment to the mission over personal recognition.
