Description

  • Identify and source breakthrough FRO concepts, recruit founding teams, and shepherd projects from concept to launch through federally funded programs.
  • Own the strategy and execution for Convergent’s response to the NSF Tech Labs Initiative and similar federal programs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with federal agencies, program officers, and agency leadership to grow the government funding portfolio.
  • Represent Convergent in policy circles, including meetings with NSF, OSTP, DOE, DARPA, ARPA-H, and other agencies.
  • Serve as a voting board member on multiple FROs, especially government-funded projects, providing strategic oversight and removing blockers.
  • Ensure FRO milestones align with scientific goals, funder requirements, and federal compliance obligations.
  • Translate FRO impact into stories, metrics, and policy language that can sustain public support and federal funding.
  • Work with public and private funders to structure blended funding and help FROs access additional philanthropic and commercial support.
  • Collaborate with Convergent leadership and the FRO Success team to build playbooks and systems for federal compliance, reporting, and partnership management.

Requirements

  • Experience operating in both startup and policy environments.
  • Ability to navigate federal agencies, RFIs/RFPs, and government funding processes.
  • Track record of building things and shipping real outcomes.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and helping shape a role as federal partnerships evolve.
  • Ability to work effectively with scientists, founders, and agency stakeholders in DC and remotely.
  • Interest in institutional design, federal science policy, and high-risk or breakthrough research funding.
  • Experience as a former AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow, OSTP staffer, DARPA director, program manager, or science foundation program officer is a plus.
  • Experience securing large federal grants or contracts for unconventional research models is a plus.
  • Published work on science policy, research funding, or institutional design is a plus.
  • Experience with SBIR/STTR, cooperative agreements, or other alternative funding mechanisms is a plus.
  • Congressional relationships or experience briefing Hill staff is a plus.
