Description

  • Lead a domain of 6–10 teams and manage the Engineering Managers who run them day to day.
  • Coach and develop Engineering Managers and senior or lead engineers in technical judgment, people leadership, and career growth.
  • Restructure teams as needed to address skill gaps, capacity issues, and key-person dependencies.
  • Set and uphold a high-performance standard across the domain and address sustained under-performance directly.
  • Build hiring and retention pathways that help teams recruit well and create growth and mobility opportunities for strong engineers.
  • Act as the first line of escalation for delivery and technical issues across the domain.
  • Coordinate work across multiple workstreams and delegate decisions to Engineering Managers with clear boundaries.
  • Partner with Product and commercial stakeholders on shared metrics, scope, trade-offs, and long-term priorities.
  • Maintain enough technical depth to ask strong questions, spot drift, and support architectural alignment without being hands-on.
  • Drive operational maturity in testing, observability, and incident response while protecting quality under deadline pressure.

Requirements

  • Track record of managing managers or equivalent senior technical leads across a multi-team domain of comparable scale.
  • Strong technical grounding across a mix of legacy and modern systems, with the ability to discuss architecture and know when to step in.
  • Evidence-based leadership style that uses delivery and quality data to make decisions and build buy-in.
  • Ability to partner credibly with Product and commercial stakeholders as a peer focused on business and user outcomes.
  • Coaching orientation that develops people through delegation and follow-through.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to create clarity for teams in a still-evolving domain.
  • Experience in public sector, health, housing, or regulated environments (nice to have).
  • Experience leading team re-structuring or broader organisational change (nice to have).
  • Exposure to legacy modernisation alongside greenfield delivery in the same portfolio (nice to have).
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering practices, Developer Experience principles, globally distributed teams, or production ownership (nice to have).
