Description

  • Lead the product engineering teams responsible for Pipelines, Test Engine, Packages, Agents & Compute, and Releases.
  • Own the pace, quality, reliability, and impact of product delivery across the portfolio.
  • Develop and coach engineering managers, staff engineers, and technical leaders.
  • Partner with Talent and People on staffing plans and identifying capability gaps.
  • Translate product strategy into delivery plans and manage trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality.
  • Set technical direction across product engineering, including architectural consistency and build/buy/partner decisions.
  • Drive operational excellence for customer-facing surfaces, including reliability, performance, and incident response.
  • Reduce recurring product incidents and support sustainable on-call rotations across time zones.
  • Represent engineering to executive leadership, the board when needed, and enterprise customers.
  • Benchmark delivery performance and set ambitious targets for the teams.

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading product engineering organizations through meaningful scaling.
  • Experience managing managers and developing staff-level individual contributors.
  • Track record of owning delivery across multiple product lines concurrently.
  • References able to speak to your coaching and sponsorship.
  • Hands-on engineering background sufficient to earn trust from senior engineers and make sound architectural calls.
  • Ability to read production code fluently, even if not writing it day to day.
  • Experience leading teams building developer tools, CI/CD, infrastructure products, or similarly technical B2B products is strongly preferred.
  • Comfort with Buildkite's core stack: Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, Go, and PostgreSQL at scale.
  • Strong quantitative approach to setting targets, surfacing risk, and measuring performance.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to drive urgent decisions.
  • Ability to lead a distributed team across AU/NZ and US Pacific time zones.
  • Based in AU/NZ or US Pacific time zones, which are prioritized for this role.
