Description

  • Conduct archival research using historic maps, aerial imagery, property deeds, construction drawings, and tax records to establish historical context.
  • Perform on-site surveys and inspections of historic structures and landscapes and document architectural features with notes and photography.
  • Prepare technical reports and compliance documentation for federal, state, and local preservation requirements, including Section 106 and CEQA.
  • Evaluate historic resources against California Register and National Register criteria to determine significance and eligibility.
  • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate impacts to historic structures and landscapes.
  • Consult with clients, agencies, nonprofits, and the public on historic preservation and landmark designations.
  • Apply cultural resource laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to projects and public consultation processes.
  • Plan and coordinate environmental compliance work, including scope, work plans, assessments, research, data analysis, timelines, budgets, and invoicing.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to elected officials, citizen groups, stakeholders, and internal teams on historic structures and landscapes.
  • Coordinate consultants, contractors, and other professionals assigned to projects.

Requirements

  • Meet Secretary of the Interior’s professional qualification guidelines for architectural history.
  • Graduate degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or a closely related field with coursework in American architectural history.
  • Master’s degree or Doctorate in architectural history or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture, or substantial scholarly research and publication contributions.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for one-on-one and large-group settings.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across the organization.
  • Ability to work effectively with teams and communicate with clients.
  • Ability to handle critical conversations with internal staff, managers, and leaders.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Experience managing environmental compliance documents across land development, government, transportation, water, energy, housing, or higher education projects (preferred).

Benefits

  • Hourly base pay range of $55.00 to $90.00, depending on skills, experience, education, and location.
  • Biweekly pay.
  • Remote role with the ability to work from a BKF office when needed.
  • Limited fieldwork/site visits rather than constant travel.
