Description

  • Build, maintain, and scale platform-level back-end services for core products.
  • Develop and ship new features across the Arbor product suite.
  • Own delivery of high-impact features and core system components.
  • Design and implement advanced tests to improve coverage and reliability.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve critical system bugs and issues.
  • Write well-architected, efficient, scalable, and maintainable code.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews and uphold high engineering standards.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and system diagrams.
  • Collaborate with engineering, QA, product, and leadership stakeholders on feature requests and roadmap work.
  • Support technical planning, technical debt reduction, interviews, scrum ceremonies, and team process improvement.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through coaching, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
  • Lead and participate in tech talks, workshops, and team learning initiatives.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience building back-end services in Python and/or PHP.
  • Comfortable working with both Python and PHP long term.
  • Experience with enterprise solutions and large-scale systems.
  • Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases, including data modelling and performance optimisation.
  • Proven experience managing large technical projects with minimal supervision.
  • Experience designing and writing APIs and services in a service-oriented environment.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles such as SOLID and DRY.
  • Experience with refactoring, clean code, Test-Driven Development, and test automation.
  • Understanding of Scrum methodology or other agile development processes.
  • Strong collaboration, mentorship, and proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and spoken English for technical and non-technical communication.
  • Nice to have: prior professional experience with both PHP and Python back-end services.
  • Nice to have: domain experience in the UK Ed-Tech space.
  • Nice to have: experience with Laminas/Symfony, FastAPI, or service decomposition.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available.

  • Salary of £75,000 - £85,000.
