Description

  • Define the top-level architecture for Apollo’s perception system across visual-inertial odometry, manipulation, obstacle avoidance, and teleoperation.
  • Lead data-driven trade studies to evaluate perception architecture decisions such as sensor selection and compute allocation.
  • Own and manage key system budgets including latency, compute utilization, memory bandwidth, and field of view coverage.
  • Elicit, define, and manage perception system requirements using enterprise requirements tools.
  • Author and maintain Interface Control Documents that define interfaces between sensors, compute, and autonomy software.
  • Develop the master verification and validation plan for the perception stack, including KPIs and test methods.
  • Partner with the safety team to perform hazard analyses and define safety-critical detection zones, fail-safe states, and redundancy requirements.
  • Resolve technical conflicts between autonomy and hardware teams by balancing software needs against thermal, mechanical, and payload constraints.
  • Mentor engineers on model-based systems engineering and strong requirement-writing practices.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in systems engineering for complex electromechanical systems, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, or advanced robotics.
  • Deep understanding of perception modalities such as cameras, LiDAR, radar, ToF, and IMUs, including their physics, error models, and integration challenges.
  • Strong working knowledge of how perception data is used in SLAM, object detection, kinematic planning, and sensor fusion.
  • Proven track record of managing requirements traceability and verification/validation matrices for shipped products.
  • Ability to build mathematical models in Python or MATLAB to simulate latency, field of view coverage, or optical performance.
  • Experience using requirements tools such as Jama, Polarion, or DOORS.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards such as ISO 13849 and IEC 61508.
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (preferred).
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Systems Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
