Description

  • Provide day-to-day legal advice on intellectual property matters for data science, engineering, and business teams.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate IP-related terms in commercial and intercompany agreements.
  • Advise on IP licensing and transactions tied to product development, tooling, and infrastructure.
  • Support open source governance, including licensing, compliance, contribution practices, and escalation of higher-risk issues.
  • Improve open source policies and policy-to-practice workflows, including intake, approvals, documentation, and training.
  • Review external-facing Tech Brand materials such as blog posts, technical articles, announcements, decks, events, web content, and social media posts.
  • Identify and manage legal issues involving copyright, trademark, licensing, attribution, confidentiality, trade secrets, content claims, and third-party rights.
  • Partner with Marketing, Comms, Legal, Engineering, Security, and Infrastructure to provide consistent guidance across regions and teams.
  • Create and maintain playbooks, templates, and training materials to help teams resolve recurring IP and open source issues.
  • Liaise with international colleagues to support consistent global guidance and cross-regional initiatives.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree and active membership in good standing in one or more U.S. jurisdictions.
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • At least 3 years of relevant legal experience in a law firm, government, and/or in-house setting.
  • Meaningful experience in IP transactions and licensing, especially for technology-focused teams.
  • Working knowledge of intellectual property law, including copyright, trademark, and patent fundamentals.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating IP provisions in technology-related and intercompany agreements.
  • Working knowledge of open source licensing concepts and compliance considerations.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and risk-framing skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for translating complex legal issues into practical guidance.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters, prioritize effectively, operate independently, and know when to escalate.
  • Preferred: at least 5 years of experience advising engineering, data science, infrastructure, or developer platform teams.
  • Preferred: familiarity with common open source licenses such as MIT, Apache 2.0, and GPL/LGPL, and compliance workflows like dependency review, notices, attribution, and policy-based approvals.
  • Preferred: familiarity with marketing/advertising law concepts such as FTC considerations, endorsements/testimonials, substantiation, and comparative claims.
  • Preferred: familiarity with sponsored research agreements and contracting with private and public universities.
  • Preferred: experience building scalable legal enablement such as templates, intake processes, training, and playbooks.
  • Preferred: comfort partnering cross-functionally with technical teams on external-facing communications.
  • US-remote eligible, but the candidate must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity.

Benefits

  • Base pay range of $157,000 to $185,000 USD.
  • May be eligible for bonus.
  • May be eligible for equity.

  • US-remote eligible position.
  • Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required.
