Description

  • Design and build a structured behavioral taxonomy with the AI team for behavioral targets, barriers, BCT mappings, and intervention modalities.
  • Translate BCTTv1, COM-B, and behavior change evidence into operational schemas and decision rules for engineering and ML teams.
  • Lead development of the just-in-time adaptive intervention (JITAI) system that determines whether, when, and how to prompt users.
  • Define decision points, tailoring variables, cadence, cooldowns, and sequencing rules that reduce fatigue and habituation.
  • Review and validate behavioral logic, algorithm outputs, edge cases, and evidence alignment in production.
  • Maintain publication-grade evidence standards and distinguish well-supported from speculative behavioral claims.
  • Own the learning-loop attribution framework, including micro-randomization, off-policy evaluation, and individual-level effect estimation.
  • Partner with engineering to define instrumentation and event-logging requirements needed before launch.
  • Advise on adaptive experimentation methods such as MRTs, MABs, contextual exploration, A/B tests, and factorial designs.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with AI/ML and behavioral analysts on recommendation architecture, study methodology, and intervention evaluation.

Requirements

  • PhD in Behavioral Science, Health Psychology, Behavioral Medicine, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a closely related field.
  • Strong publication track record combining behavior change theory with closed-loop system design.
  • Advanced training or applied experience in causal inference, reinforcement learning, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • 5+ years of senior behavioral science experience in intervention design or taxonomy/framework development plus causal-inference or quantitative research.
  • Deep expertise in BCTTv1, COM-B, and related behavior change models, preferably in digital health or technology-mediated interventions.
  • Demonstrated experience with causal inference, off-policy evaluation, adaptive trial designs, Micro-Randomized Trials (MRTs), Multi-Arm Bandits (MABs), and reinforcement learning.
  • Experience with N-of-1 experimental designs, sequential decision-making, and within-person inference.
  • Ability to translate academic rigor into sprint-compatible deliverables in an industry setting.
  • Proven ability to work with engineering and ML teams on taxonomy design, structured schemas, knowledge representation, and instrumentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience in health tech, behavior change platforms, or consumer wearable/connected device ecosystems is strongly preferred.
  • This is a full-time role with a defined scope and timeline and structured touchpoints across Engineering, ML, and BeSci teams.
