Description

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of commercial lawyers and set their priorities.
  • Build and scale the commercial legal function with efficient processes, automation, and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Identify, implement, and champion tooling that improves contracting speed, quality, consistency, and contract lifecycle visibility.
  • Balance support for high-touch strategic enterprise deals with low-touch automated workflow pipelines.
  • Set the long-term vision for the team and oversee hiring and development.
  • Partner with executive and senior leadership on commercial strategy, risk tolerance, and legal operations.
  • Structure, negotiate, and draft a wide range of commercial agreements, including major customer and alliance agreements.
  • Provide legal advice to internal stakeholders on commercial and legal matters.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and training across the company.
  • Provide thought leadership internally and externally.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in-house or at a reputable firm; US experience is preferred.
  • In-house experience in an advertising, technology, ad tech, data, or media company.
  • Strong negotiation experience managing commercial and legal risk in the digital media/ad tech industry.
  • Deep understanding of commercial transactions, IP issues, and data licensing concepts.
  • Experience directly managing, mentoring, and developing a team of lawyers.
  • Track record of building or scaling a commercial legal function, including process design, playbooks, and templates.
  • Demonstrated interest in adopting automation and AI tools to improve legal workflows.
  • Ability to own and manage projects end to end with strong follow-through.
  • Excellent legal and business judgment with the ability to balance legal risk and business strategy.
  • Exceptional writing skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to create original drafted documents.
  • Ability to mentor and educate non-legal team members in a constructive and motivational way.
  • Strong creativity and ability to work collaboratively in a remote setting.
  • Call to the Bar in one or more Canadian provinces or one or more US states, with an active license to practice law in that jurisdiction.
