Description

  • Lead the development and expansion of in-house machining capabilities for Starship components.
  • Perform Design for Manufacturability (DFM) analyses on parts and assemblies to improve manufacturability, assembly, testing, and scalability.
  • Partner with design, testing, and integration teams to provide feedback, accelerate iteration, and reduce risk.
  • Investigate and resolve quality issues from part inspections and approve dispositions for out-of-tolerance conditions.
  • Identify, procure, install, calibrate, and maintain machine shop equipment.
  • Own strategy for CapEx, staffing, equipment specifications, production layouts, training, and machining processes.
  • Drive cost reduction and process optimization across fabrication and manufacturing operations.
  • Improve manufacturing methods, techniques, best practices, tooling, and automation to increase throughput and precision.
  • Recommend and implement changes to operational sequences, equipment utilization, and workflow efficiency.
  • Collaborate with other SpaceX machine shops and external partners to manage capacity, scheduling, and shared resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or physics.
  • 5+ years of machining experience.
  • Experience taking products from research and development into production.
  • Master's degree or PhD in an engineering discipline (preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership role in a manufacturing environment (preferred).
  • Experience setting up and operating state-of-the-art machining equipment (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of standard machine shop manufacturing processes and setups (preferred).
  • Experience operating CNCs, conventional lathes, mills, and other equipment used to manufacture high-precision parts (preferred).
  • Proficiency in CNC programming for lathes and mills (preferred).
  • Knowledge of GD&T and inspection procedures (preferred).
  • Experience with precision metrology systems such as photogrammetry, CMMs, and 3D imaging (preferred).
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs unassisted for 1-2 hours per day.
  • Must meet ITAR eligibility requirements as a U.S. citizen/national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or otherwise authorized by the U.S. Department of State.
