Description

  • Define the long-term data engineering strategy aligned with company priorities and engineering best practices.
  • Design coherent data ecosystems across pipelines and API boundaries and simplify infrastructure to reduce maintenance costs.
  • Make high-impact technical decisions, including build-versus-buy and framework selection, and review designs to identify technical risks early.
  • Implement solutions that improve developer efficiency and establish engineering-wide quality standards and best practices.
  • Roll out major features and systems reliably with monitoring, failure domain analysis, and success metrics.
  • Identify group-wide opportunities by aligning technical work with business strategy and redirect team efforts when needed.
  • Enforce data governance policies, including PII/PHI protection, security, and compliance requirements.
  • Improve data quality and reliability for data shared internally and externally.
  • Influence the roadmaps of other teams and lead decision-making in critical situations.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, provide constructive feedback, and help develop team members' impact.
  • Present technical strategies and business cases to executive stakeholders.
  • Build cross-functional relationships and drive adoption of new technologies or processes across the organization.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of industrial experience in data engineering with an advanced degree, or 12+ years with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Start-up and healthcare experience is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated mastery of data modeling concepts, database design principles, and data warehouse technologies such as Snowflake through production-grade implementations.
  • Strong skills in PySpark, SQL, and Python are required.
  • Experience with modern object-oriented or compiled languages such as C#/C++, Go, Java, or Scala is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with ETL tools and frameworks such as Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, dbt, Looker, or Superset.
  • In-depth experience managing the full data lifecycle, including development, implementation, and production release of complex data processing solutions using distributed systems.
  • Proven ability to make decisions that optimize for the broader engineering organization in ambiguous environments.
