Description

  • Analyze BOMs and break products or packaging assemblies into materials, layers, coatings, compositions, and weights.
  • Determine material classifications for each jurisdiction based on statutory and program definitions.
  • Build defensible assumed compositions and material proxies when supplier data is incomplete or unavailable.
  • Model material-switch, source-reduction, and fee-scenario recommendations for customers.
  • Author, maintain, and update classification routing logic across jurisdictions as regulations and materials change.
  • Run schema conformance checks and multi-pass quality control for material and classification accuracy.
  • Resolve escalated composition, classification, exemption, and mapping questions.
  • Define the material science, threshold, and specification rules that power automated compliance and material suggestion workflows.
  • Translate material properties and regulatory requirements into structured rules for the product and engineering teams.
  • Conduct bespoke material deep-dives and technical recyclability or circularity evaluations for customers.

Requirements

  • Degree and/or substantial hands-on background in materials science, chemistry, plastics/polymer engineering, textile engineering, packaging science/engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to analyze product and material composition, including resins, laminates, coatings, composites, synthetics, and multi-layer assemblies.
  • Ability to estimate composition and weight when supplier or specification data is incomplete.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and comfort owning high-stakes technical quality-control work.
  • Strong interest in policy and research, with the ability to ground decisions in regulatory text and defend determinations.
  • Ability to translate technical and regulatory analysis into clear requirements and explanations for product, engineering, and customer teams.
  • Hands-on experience with physical materials, material characterization, specs, or processing methods is strongly valued.
  • Comfort with data analysis, ERP structures, or technical software, plus scripting or automation experience such as Python or SQL.
  • Prior experience in EPR, compliance, sustainability, or circular economy work in the U.S., Canada, or Europe is preferred.
  • Familiarity with life-cycle assessment, design-for-recyclability/circularity protocols, or recycled-content evaluation is a plus.
