Description

  • Lead a cross-functional team of Backend, iOS, Android, and Web engineers to evolve Reddit’s media stack.
  • Drive infrastructure modernization to make media a first-class part of the platform.
  • Own media quality and delivery metrics, including Time to First Frame (TTFF), stall/rebuffer rates, and exits before video screen (EBVS).
  • Partner with infrastructure teams to scale media delivery through CDNs, edge computing, and caching strategies.
  • Standardize media protocols and formats across the stack, including HLS, MPEG-DASH, CMAF, and MP4.
  • Set the technical vision and direction for media systems while staying ahead of emerging technologies.
  • Use data-driven insights to navigate ambiguity and guide team decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Data, and ML teams to align on organizational goals and maximize impact.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and experimentation while balancing platform scale and product velocity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • 8+ years of industry experience, including 3+ years of engineering management experience.
  • Experience leading complex, high-volume consumer systems.
  • Experience managing cross-platform teams spanning Backend and Mobile/Client is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Java, Go, or Python.
  • Strong background in video streaming technologies, CDN routing, and media ingestion.
  • Understanding of multi-part uploads, encoding schedulers, and adaptive bitrate streaming.
  • Experience balancing short-term performance fixes with long-term architectural overhauls.
  • Experience defining and governing Service Level Objectives and Indicators (SLOs and SLIs).
  • Experience brainstorming and implementing experimental ideas to drive growth.
  • Exceptional leadership, team management, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience with media creation tools or experiences, such as video/image editing tools, composers, or creator UIs.
