Description

  • Define and lead underwriting strategy, governance, philosophy, and portfolio performance across all Employee Benefits product lines.
  • Serve as a primary underwriting advisor to the SVP of Employee Benefits and the leadership team on pricing strategy, risk selection, and market growth opportunities.
  • Partner with Product, Distribution, Actuarial, Finance, Operations, Claims, and Technology to align underwriting with business objectives.
  • Lead, mentor, recruit, and develop a multi-level underwriting organization with clear performance expectations and succession plans.
  • Oversee underwriting for complex aggregator opportunities, including PEOs, payroll companies, general agencies, and national brokers.
  • Build scalable frameworks for evaluating aggregator risk, pricing, guarantees, and block-on-block underwriting.
  • Champion underwriting modernization through automated workflows, rules engines, dashboards, analytics, and AI-driven decision support tools.
  • Improve quote-to-bind cycle time, accuracy, consistency, and overall underwriting efficiency through process design and automation.
  • Establish process controls, audit routines, quality assurance practices, and continuous improvement standards.
  • Own underwriting profitability goals, portfolio analytics, rate actions, loss ratio monitoring, and reserve adequacy oversight.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of Employee Benefits underwriting experience, with deep knowledge of small-group and mid-market segments.
  • Direct underwriting experience in Dental, Vision, Life, STD, LTD, Paid Leaves, and Supplemental Health.
  • Proven leadership experience managing underwriting teams; VP-level or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to underwrite and negotiate large aggregators, including PEOs, payroll providers, general agencies, and national brokers.
  • Strong process-engineering mindset with experience building underwriting operations from the ground up.
  • Experience implementing technology modernization, automation, and AI-enabled decisioning.
  • Highly collaborative, entrepreneurial, and tech-forward mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort presenting at the executive level.

  • Targeted base salary of $171,000 to $288,000 per year.
