Description

  • Define the long-term technical strategy and architecture for Homefeed, Search, and AI Assistant.
  • Drive a multi-year roadmap to unify signals, features, and models across discovery surfaces.
  • Lead the design and adoption of large-scale retrieval and ranking systems that improve relevance and monetization.
  • Architect how large language models and foundation models integrate into Pinterest’s discovery stack.
  • Set technical direction for experimentation, measurement, and evaluation frameworks, including offline and online methods.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership through design reviews, prototyping, launch de-risking, and mentoring.
  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Research, and Design to turn product ideas into robust technical plans.
  • Raise engineering standards for reliability, performance, security/privacy, cost efficiency, and operational health.
  • Represent Pinterest externally through talks, publications, and partnerships, and help attract talent.
  • Work horizontally across multiple product and platform teams while contributing meaningful hands-on technical work.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of industry experience in large-scale systems and/or machine learning.
  • Track record of impact in search, recommendations, feeds, or conversational AI.
  • Experience as a Principal Engineer, Architect, or equivalent senior technical leader.
  • Deep expertise in at least two areas: retrieval and ranking, representation learning, search systems, or large language models/generative AI.
  • Strong familiarity with the remaining areas listed above.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive multi-year architectural transformations at scale.
  • Strong product intuition and experience partnering with PM, Design, and Data Science on ambiguous product bets.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain strategy, tradeoffs, and technical direction to varied audiences.
  • Passion for mentoring senior and staff engineers and building strong engineering cultures.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: prior experience in consumer discovery products at global scale.
  • Preferred: experience building or integrating AI assistants or agentic workflows into consumer experiences.

Benefits

  • Base salary range of $242,634 to $449,541 USD for US-based applicants.
  • Eligible for equity.
  • Flexible PinFlex working model.
  • Some teams allow remote work with in-office collaboration 1–2 times per quarter.
  • Some teams require in-office collaboration once per week near SF, Palo Alto, or Seattle.
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this role.
