Description

  • Lead development and validation of collision detection, collision response, imminent collision handling, and high-authority braking systems.
  • Define requirements, thresholds, response behaviors, and acceptance criteria for safety-critical functions.
  • Own benchmark programs measuring autonomous vehicle safety, comfort, and assertiveness against human driving data.
  • Define validation coverage, identify gaps, and coordinate cross-functional efforts to close them.
  • Produce and maintain safety-case evidence, including hazard analysis, STPA, HAZOP, FMEA, requirements, and coverage arguments.
  • Scale crash-data analysis, collision-event ingestion and labeling, and automated safety monitoring through tooling and automation.
  • Use simulation, real-world road data, and closed-course testing to validate safety functions and performance targets.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team.
  • Collaborate with Autonomy, Infrastructure, Operations, Legal, and Systems teams to meet launch criteria.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years of experience, or Master’s degree/PhD with 5+ years of experience, in Systems Engineering, Functional Safety, Autonomous Systems, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years leading safety-critical development, validation, or assurance programs for autonomous driving or other emerging safety-critical technologies.
  • Experience growing small, high-performing engineering teams as a hands-on technical leader.
  • Demonstrated experience defining quantitative targets and acceptance criteria for safety, comfort, and assertiveness.
  • Expertise in hazard and safety analysis methods, including STPA, HAZOP, FMEA, and hazard analysis and risk assessment.
  • Experience using large-scale simulation, track testing, and road data to generate actionable engineering insights.
  • Familiarity with SOTIF, ISO 26262, UL 4600, AVSC behavior competencies, and related industry standards.
  • Experience with collision or crash data analysis, public crash databases, or regulatory incident reporting.
  • Proficiency in statistical methods, data science, Python, SQL, and data visualization preferred.
  • Experience with human naturalistic driving benchmarks, ride-comfort modeling, safety argumentation, regulatory review, or safety research preferred.

  • Base salary range of $200,000–$275,000 USD.
