Description

  • Design, build, and integrate onboard and off-board airborne perception capabilities for autonomous flight and decision making.
  • Collaborate with the R&D software engineering manager on team objectives, milestones, and the technology roadmap.
  • Support architecture design and perform trade-off analysis for perception subsystems.
  • Drive sensor, integration, and algorithm approaches for perception systems.
  • Establish and maintain infrastructure and processes for development, testing, and evaluation of traditional and machine learning-based algorithms.
  • Work closely with the R&D software team through the research, design, implementation, and testing cycle.
  • Write, test, document, and review code according to Merlin’s development standards.
  • Collaborate across Merlin to develop systems that solve aviation and autonomy challenges.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or a related subject.
  • 5+ years of professional experience developing perception software for physical systems such as aircraft, robotics, or medical devices.
  • Subject matter expertise in perception, including detection, processing, and tracking using cameras, radar, LIDAR, or other relevant sensors.
  • Experience developing sensor fusion algorithms.
  • Experience implementing machine learning-based perception and planning algorithms, including deep learning and reinforcement learning techniques.
  • Familiarity with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and OpenCV.
  • Experience with Linux and open-source development tools.
  • Proficiency in modern software development workflows, including version control, pipelines, unit testing, and peer review.
  • Experience with the overall product development cycle, including system-level design, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in both Python and C++.
  • Familiarity with simulation software.
  • Preferred: familiarity with autonomy software areas such as reasoning and decision making, scheduling and motion planning, human-machine interaction, system reliability, and state estimation and control.
  • Preferred: experience with robotics middleware such as ROS/2.
  • Preferred: ability to interpret, develop, and integrate abstract code for efficiency, modularity, and reusability.
  • Preferred: experience with intrinsic and extrinsic camera calibration.
  • Preferred: hardware and software integration and debugging experience.
  • Preferred: flight testing experience with uncrewed or crewed aircraft.
  • Preferred: awareness of aviation certification standards such as DO-178.
  • Preferred: pilot license and flight experience are a plus.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be able to travel 10-20% of the time for team meetings, integration events, and flight testing.
