Description

  • Architect the end-to-end inference pipeline for Life360’s AI layer, including how family context, behavioral signals, and document understanding are prepared for LLMs.
  • Choose and revisit model and hosting approaches across self-hosted, API-based, fine-tuned, and prompt-engineered solutions.
  • Build and operate serving infrastructure with latency budgets, batching, caching, fallbacks, and graceful degradation.
  • Design and maintain evaluation loops and harnesses to measure whether product changes improve outcomes in production.
  • Own cost modeling and optimize inference spend through context compression, model routing, and pre-computation.
  • Decide what data is persisted, summarized, or discarded for LLM consumption.
  • Set infrastructure-level standards for safety, privacy, trust, encryption, access controls, and audit trails.
  • Collaborate in a startup-style environment with minimal specifications and high ownership over the initiative.
  • Write clear specs, decision records, and playbooks that humans and agents can execute precisely.

Requirements

  • Deep engineering experience building and operating AI systems in production at meaningful scale.
  • Significant experience with real users, real load, and on-call responsibility.
  • Fluency with modern LLM serving tools such as vLLM, TGI, SGLang, or hosted APIs.
  • Experience building evaluation harnesses and using evals to drive real progress.
  • Ability to build cloud systems from the ground up, including service selection, integration, reliability, and cost control.
  • Strong focus on inference cost and instincts for identifying and fixing cost leaks.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-native workflows such as Claude Code, Cursor, prompt engineering, context window management, and MCP/function calling.
  • Comfort making decisions with incomplete information in a fast-moving startup environment.
  • Strong written communication skills for specs, decision records, and playbooks.
  • Preferred experience with agent systems, retrieval pipelines, or long-context personalization.
  • Preferred experience with privacy architecture in multi-user systems where context is shared across users with different access rights.
  • Preferred experience building data-moat products where the underlying data is the competitive advantage.
