Description

  • Adjudicate vessel identifications that automated detection cannot confidently resolve.
  • Attach verified identities to dark, spoofed, or low-confidence contacts with sourced evidence and an explicit confidence level.
  • Investigate AIS gaps, dark periods, GNSS and position spoofing, duplicated or borrowed MMSI, and vessel substitution.
  • Apply OSINT tradecraft across satellite imagery, ship-photo databases, vessel registries, ownership records, port and terminal records, classification and insurance sources, and open reporting.
  • Reconstruct pattern-of-life and ownership histories to explain vessel behavior over time.
  • Produce structured identification records with clear provenance and disciplined confidence language.
  • Provide labelled ground truth and edge cases to the data science team to improve models.
  • Help define where automation should focus next and uphold sourcing and data-integrity standards.
  • Write evidence-led assessments for analysts, compliance teams, and senior stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in intelligence, investigations, maritime analysis, or a related OSINT research discipline.
  • Working knowledge of the maritime domain, including vessel types and particulars, AIS, registries, flag and ownership structures, and shipping operations.
  • Strong source discovery, source evaluation, cross-referencing, and provenance management skills.
  • Confidence interpreting satellite, optical, and ideally SAR imagery.
  • Meticulous documentation and clear written assessments with careful use of confidence and caveat language.
  • Familiarity with sanctions, trade compliance, and evasion typologies such as shadow-fleet behavior, ship-to-ship transfers, and chokepoint activity is preferred.
  • Experience contributing labelled data or ground truth to machine-learning workflows, or working alongside a data science team, is preferred.
  • GIS and geospatial tooling experience, and comfort with large datasets, is preferred.
  • Additional languages relevant to major shipping and registry jurisdictions are preferred.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in international relations, security or intelligence studies, maritime studies, geography, data, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
