Description

  • Create custom real-time visual effects and implement them in Unreal Engine 4/5, Unity, or a proprietary engine.
  • Build all required textures and materials for effects, maintaining clean and readable graphs and parameter setups.
  • Use supporting tools such as Photoshop, Blender, Houdini, and Maya as needed.
  • Troubleshoot complex material, blueprint, or scripting-hook issues in partnership with Tech Art and Engineering.
  • Own VFX optimization considerations, including particle counts, overdraw, memory, performance constraints, and console targets.
  • Set the quality bar for VFX work, provide reviews and paintovers, and guide execution for small teams or strike teams.
  • Identify production risks early, propose solutions, and escalate issues before they impact delivery.
  • Collaborate closely with Designers, Concept Artists, Art Direction, Tech Art, and Engineering.
  • Communicate with clients when needed to clarify requirements, share work in progress, and align on definition of done.
  • Assign tasks, set short-term priorities, and maintain an organized backlog.

Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years of professional game industry experience, including at least one shipped title.
  • Proven end-to-end real-time VFX workflow experience with in-engine implementation in Unreal Engine 4 or 5 and Niagara.
  • Strong particle animation fundamentals and shape language, including readability, timing, and impact.
  • Strong material and texture creation skills in Photoshop and/or Substance Designer.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of optimization fundamentals, including particle counts, overdraw budgets, and performance constraints.
  • Leadership-level communication skills, including clear written and verbal updates and actionable feedback.
  • Experience mentoring or leading other artists, even if not in a formal lead role.
  • Ability to work Central Time core hours with possible overlap with Pacific or Eastern Time.
  • Flexible work arrangement capability, including remote, hybrid, or onsite work.
  • Preferred qualifications include Houdini, Substance Designer, EmberGen, Unity, scripting or coding skills such as C# or Python, 2D/3D animation skills, stylized and realistic VFX experience, foliage or atmospherics experience, and VFX standards/pipeline experience.
