Description

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain scientific and engineering software in Python and C++, including computational modeling and numerical algorithms.
  • Own software architecture, interfaces, data structures, algorithms, and maintainability standards for internal engineering tools.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD, automated testing, quality gates, release, packaging, and reproducible artifact-delivery systems.
  • Develop packaging pipelines for Python packages, Conda environments, and C++ binaries and libraries, including dependency and compiler management.
  • Maintain Docker and Apptainer container build and runtime patterns, including base-image upgrades and patching.
  • Develop and support HPC workflows using Slurm, Open OnDemand, MPI, and GPU computing.
  • Establish software quality-assurance processes, controlled delivery gates, traceability, documentation, and audit evidence.
  • Collaborate with nuclear engineers and computational scientists to translate requirements into software and improve modeling workflows.
  • Set engineering standards through design and code reviews, mentor engineers, document systems, and promote shared ownership.
  • Diagnose complex build, dependency, environment, and runtime issues and provide technical support across the software stack.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, computational science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant software engineering experience developing scientific, engineering, computational, or technically complex software.
  • Strong experience developing scientific or engineering software with depth in both Python and C++.
  • Experience implementing computational modeling, numerical methods, or comparable quantitative algorithms.
  • Demonstrated software architecture experience, including defining interfaces and evaluating maintainability, performance, and long-term cost.
  • Experience with automated unit and integration testing, such as PyTest or GoogleTest.
  • Proficiency with Git, Linux, Bash, and SSH, plus strong software design fundamentals.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and conducting design and code reviews.
  • Preferred: Master’s or Ph.D. in a related discipline, particularly with numerical-methods research experience.
  • Preferred: Experience with Docker or Apptainer, Conda, CMake, GitHub Actions, HPC environments, software QA, documentation tools, cloud platforms, or infrastructure as code.
  • Ability to communicate technical tradeoffs with non-software specialists and manage software through its full lifecycle.
  • Ability to work onsite or remotely as applicable, travel occasionally, work occasional weekends or extended hours, and comply with safety and export-control requirements.
