Description

  • Design, implement, and deploy algorithms for order batching, shopper assignment, routing, and marketplace positioning.
  • Own the full model lifecycle from problem formulation and feature development through evaluation, experimentation, rollout, and monitoring.
  • Build low-latency production services in Python and, when needed, C++ or Go that integrate with optimization solvers and cloud infrastructure.
  • Partner with product, operations, engineering, and data science to define roadmaps, success metrics, and measurable business impact.
  • Use experimentation, causal methods, and counterfactual simulation to validate changes and reduce launch risk.
  • Contribute to engineering excellence through code reviews, design documentation, testing, observability, and on-call support.
  • Mentor peers and help raise the technical bar across the team.
  • Translate ambiguous operational problems into scalable optimization and machine learning systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Operations Research, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional experience building and shipping machine learning and/or optimization systems to production.
  • 3+ years of experience solving large-scale combinatorial optimization problems such as VRP, matching, or scheduling.
  • Experience using solvers such as OR-Tools, Gurobi, or CPLEX with MIP or CP-SAT methods and heuristic approaches.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, including production-quality coding, testing, profiling, and code review practices.
  • Hands-on experience deploying models or algorithms as microservices with Docker and Kubernetes on GCP or AWS.
  • Experience operating low-latency, high-throughput decision services targeting sub-second P95 response times.
  • Practical experience with A/B testing or online experimentation from hypothesis to analysis and rollout decisions.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with engineering, product, and data science stakeholders.
  • Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field is preferred.
  • Domain experience in logistics, ride-hailing, delivery, or marketplace optimization at scale is preferred.
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning, contextual bandits, geospatial data, routing APIs, graph algorithms, streaming systems, feature stores, or C++/Go is preferred.

Benefits

  • Highly market-competitive compensation with location-based base pay.
  • Base salary range of $240,000-$253,500 USD for CA, NY, CT, and NJ; $230,000-$243,000 USD for WA; $221,000-$233,000 USD for several other listed states; and $201,000-$212,000 USD for all other states.
  • Eligible for a new hire equity grant and annual refresh grants.
  • Remote work with Instacart’s Flex First policy.
  • Flexible choice of work location, including home, office, or coffee shop, with regular in-person community events.
