Description

  • Provide commercially focused legal advice to business stakeholders and clients on operational and strategic matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal documents, including commercial agreements, NDAs, leases, and service level agreements.
  • Support work across corporate/commercial, employment, regulatory, disputes, compliance, governance, procurement, property, or advisory areas.
  • Assess legal risk and recommend practical mitigations to protect the organisation’s interests.
  • Manage external attorneys, advocates, and specialist advisors, including budgets, timelines, and matter strategy.
  • Support dispute management through pre-litigation correspondence, document preparation, settlement discussions, and litigation oversight.
  • Contribute to compliance programmes, internal controls, and policy development by monitoring regulatory changes and advising on implementation.
  • Maintain accurate legal records, contract repositories, and matter documentation while ensuring confidentiality and proper information handling.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams such as HR, Finance, Procurement, and Operations to improve legal processes and decision-making.
  • Support governance activities, including board and committee documentation where relevant, and mentor junior colleagues.

Requirements

  • LLB or equivalent qualification is typically required for legal practitioner roles.
  • Admission as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa or relevant practising status is advantageous for certain roles.
  • A relevant degree or qualification with substantial legal experience may be considered for contracts, compliance, legal operations, or specialist roles.
  • Typically 5–12+ years of progressive legal experience in-house and/or in practice.
  • Experience in one or more areas such as commercial contracting, corporate governance, employment relations, regulatory compliance, disputes, procurement, property, or risk.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, stakeholder management, and sound judgement in managing legal and commercial risk.
  • Familiarity with legal tools and systems such as document management, contract lifecycle management (CLM), matter management, and Microsoft 365.
  • Professional fluency in English is required.
  • Additional South African languages are advantageous depending on the stakeholder environment.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines, work independently, and maintain discretion with sensitive information.
