Description

  • Design, build, and test core Gusto products including Payroll, Benefits, HR, Retirement, Gusto Money, Gusto Solo, and Gusto Pro.
  • Shape features from early specification and design through launch and long-term iteration.
  • Write clean frontend code and design reliable backend APIs.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering to identify customer pain points and develop solutions.
  • Prototype, iterate, and launch product improvements on a daily basis.
  • Mentor other engineers and help solve complex technical problems at scale.
  • Help scale large Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React applications.
  • Own products after launch, including performance, reliability, and ongoing improvement.
  • Influence product direction and contribute to measurable customer impact.
  • Build products that deliver a strong customer experience.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience building scalable solutions that reduce customer pain and improve customer experience.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities.
  • Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, with an ability to evaluate and scale AI use safely across teams.
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and drive measurable impact at scale.
  • Experience with large-scale refactors, performance issues, and reliability issues.
  • Strong sense of ownership over all aspects of a product area.
  • Ability to mentor engineers and improve team performance and impact.
  • Experience in or interest in Ruby on Rails.
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.
  • Two-day travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is required.
  • Hybrid office attendance of approximately 2-3 days per week is expected for employees based in Denver, San Francisco, New York City, or Scottsdale, depending on role.

  • Cash compensation targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver and most remote locations, or $197,000–$247,000 in San Francisco and New York.

  • Equity is included in the total rewards package, with final offers based on experience and expertise.
  • Work from one of Gusto’s offices in Denver, San Francisco, New York City, or Scottsdale with designated hybrid days.
