Description

  • Lead the Technical Writing organization through process evaluation and redesign to improve documentation efficiency and alignment with product development.
  • Drive AI readiness by identifying opportunities to use AI in documentation workflows and reduce unnecessary handoffs.
  • Partner with Engineering to move documentation earlier in the development process and establish shared ownership of first-draft technical content.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and UX to surface technical documentation more directly within the product experience.
  • Shape the team structure and operating model to support current priorities, healthy management scope, and future needs.
  • Develop the team’s skills, expectations, and ways of working for the next phase of technical writing at GitLab.
  • Improve the docs site experience by guiding priorities that make content more useful, accessible, and actionable.
  • Own strategic decisions for the function and present practical options for solving documentation and workflow challenges.
  • Assess the current team structure and capabilities to prepare the function for its next phase of growth.
  • Raise satisfaction with the docs site and strengthen cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

  • Experience leading technical writing or documentation teams through organizational, process, or operating model change.
  • Fluency with AI in both strategic and practical contexts, including using AI to improve workflows and evaluating where human judgment is essential.
  • Ability to build strong partnerships with Engineering, Product Management, UX, and other functions.
  • Judgment to balance innovation with practicality and approach automation thoughtfully.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and comfort proposing several workable paths forward in ambiguous situations.
  • Experience developing leaders and teams, including assessing capabilities, setting direction, and supporting change.
  • Strength in asynchronous collaboration and communication across distributed teams and time zones.
  • Technical credibility in documentation, developer workflows, and docs-as-code environments.
  • Content strategy expertise to shape documentation priorities, information architecture, and alignment with product goals and user needs.
  • Transferable leadership experience from adjacent disciplines is welcome.
