Description

  • Build new backend features for the core systems that power Genki's products and operations.
  • Improve testability, reliability, and overall code quality across the backend codebase.
  • Help evolve the backend architecture over time within an event-sourced system.
  • Work through an under-documented codebase by reading code, asking questions, and filling in gaps in understanding.
  • Develop a deep understanding of complex product domains and business logic quickly.
  • Make informed technical decisions when requirements or information are incomplete.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Backend Developer as the second developer on the backend team.
  • Contribute to development workflows that increasingly use AI-agentic tools.

Requirements

  • Experience working on larger backend systems in production.
  • Experience working in complex product domains and ramping up quickly on unfamiliar business logic.
  • Comfort with event sourcing, event-driven architecture, or similar patterns.
  • Strong focus on code quality, including readable code, meaningful tests, and clean APIs.
  • Some hands-on experience with AI-agentic development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar.
  • Interest in going deeper with AI-agentic development tools.
  • Attention to detail and pride in doing work carefully.
  • Curiosity and self-direction when working in unfamiliar codebases.
  • Ability to make decisions with incomplete information.
  • Experience in a startup or scaleup environment.
  • Comfort working fully remote in an async-first team and communicating clearly without frequent meetings.
  • Openness to working with people from different cultures, backgrounds, and interests.
  • Kotlin experience with coroutines (current stack).
  • Familiarity with Stripe, Heroku or Railway, and GraphQL (current stack).
