Description

  • Set technical direction and long-term strategy for cloud, networking, infrastructure, delivery, and reliability capabilities.
  • Lead architecture reviews and technical engagements from system design through production operation.
  • Design, build, test, deploy, and operate platform services, APIs, CLIs, controllers, workflows, and automation.
  • Build self-service tools for environment provisioning, service deployment, infrastructure management, and incident response.
  • Create standardized development and delivery workflows, including templates, libraries, policy-as-code, and reusable platform components.
  • Design and operate cloud, compute, storage, identity, networking, and security infrastructure across regions and public clouds.
  • Define SLOs, error budgets, production-readiness standards, observability, capacity planning, and failure-recovery practices.
  • Lead major incident response, postmortems, and follow-up improvements while reducing repetitive operational work.
  • Influence engineering standards through design reviews, technical writing, education, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Mentor engineers and develop technical leaders across Gemini’s platform engineering organization.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, SRE, or equivalent, including substantial production-system ownership.
  • Strong programming ability in Go, Python, TypeScript, Rust, or a similar language, with experience building services, automation, APIs, CLIs, or developer tools.
  • Production experience operating distributed systems, including failure diagnosis, capacity management, performance improvement, high availability, and recovery.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar cloud platforms and infrastructure as code such as Terraform.
  • Experience with containers and orchestration platforms including Kubernetes, EKS, GKE, AKS, Docker, or Nomad.
  • Experience managing cloud network security controls such as firewalls, DNS filtering, and network segmentation.
  • Experience designing CI/CD and automated delivery systems with testing, progressive rollout, rollback, and change validation.
  • Practical observability experience with metrics, logs, traces, alerting, dashboards, and OpenTelemetry or comparable tools.
  • Working knowledge of SLOs, error budgets, incident response, blameless postmortems, and operational-toil reduction.
  • Experience setting technical direction across teams, influencing without direct authority, mentoring engineers, and communicating complex tradeoffs; build tooling experience with Bazel or Buck2 is preferred.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $168,000–$240,000 in New York, excluding bonus and equity.
