Description

  • Improve service resiliency, performance, and system design across Backcountry’s platform.
  • Lead critical incident resolution and ensure follow-up fixes are captured through postmortems.
  • Use AI-assisted engineering tools to investigate issues, automate work, and ship fixes across infrastructure and application repositories.
  • Design and implement automation to reduce operational toil.
  • Partner with SREs, developers, and architects to evaluate and apply best practices for current and future workloads.
  • Monitor system health and capacity and take proactive action to prevent failures.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to build, deploy, and support features.
  • Build and maintain observability instrumentation, including metrics, logs, traces, profiles, and SLIs/SLOs.
  • Participate in FinOps initiatives for GCP and AWS, including capacity planning and committed-use discount strategy.
  • Participate in the SRE on-call rotation.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience supporting containerized production services, preferably running Kubernetes.
  • 3+ years of experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, AWS CDK, or Ansible.
  • 3+ years of cloud experience operating in Google Cloud Platform and/or AWS; Azure/Entra exposure is a plus.
  • Ability to diagnose issues and ship bug fixes directly to application code, not just infrastructure.
  • Ability to investigate issues across infrastructure and application git repositories end to end.
  • Proficiency with AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot, plus MCP-based agents.
  • Strong scripting and programming skills in Bash, Python, and TypeScript/Node.js.
  • Experience managing Linux production environments on any major distribution.
  • Strong understanding of internet protocols such as DHCP, DNS, HTTPS, and SSH.
  • Understanding of DevOps CI/CD and SRE practices such as SLOs and SLIs.
  • Hands-on experience with observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, and OpenSearch, or equivalents.
  • Experience with GitOps and Kubernetes packaging tools such as ArgoCD, Helm, and Kustomize.
  • Ability to track emerging technology trends and evaluate their engineering value.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced English communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Preferred: Experience using AI coding assistants to build fixes, automation, and application/infrastructure improvements.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with PCI-scoped or other regulated environments.
  • Preferred: Previous ecommerce experience.
  • Preferred: Professional certifications such as GCP, CKA, or AWS.
